USAAF Group Box Formation Evolution (Front View)

Of all air armies, the USAAF experimented with bomber formations the most.
The Group combat box changed during the war.

In September of 1942, the 18-aircraft bomber group flew in a formation that resembled the Luftwaffe's.

The 1942 formation was 780 yards wide and 500 feet high.

The need for concentrated firepower gave way to a new formation in Apr 1943. This time the box was 380 yards wide and 900 feet high.

The massive production capacity of the USA allowed the groups to increase substantially in size. By Jan 1944, the Group was 36-bomber strong and the combat box was 520 yards wide and 600 feet high
