Pilots know that radio communication sometimes is garbled and it is difficult to understand what the other people are saying.

Phonetic alphabets were devised to prevent miscommunication. The Germans and the British had their own. Nowadays, the modern phonetic alphabet is in use worldwide (for aeronautics purposes, that is).

If a radio controller wanted a pilot to fly to map reference DC-01 he would say:
German: "Dora Caesar" and then the numbers in German
British: "Don Charlie" and then the numbers in English.

Today, we would say: "Delta Charlie zero one"
